Join us for the official launch of Aging as an Artform: Notes From the Far Side of Youth, a new book of essays by local authors including Interference Arts’ Artistic Director, Craig Harris. The authors will be present for the launch and will each read an excerpt of their essay from the book. Author Linda Fox will read her full story, “The 96 Year Old Man Magnet”. The authors will also be signing copies of Aging as an Artform that will be for sale at the event.
Aging as an Artform features beautiful, full color printed images that accompany the essays. The launch event will include a special visual art exhibit featuring many images from the book.
About Aging as an Artform
Aging as an Artform empowers and gives purpose and community to a group of author/artists. They embraced and celebrated their lived experiences both in the past and as they look toward the future. These author/artists met and wrote from January-June 2026. The essays are meant to honor and celebrate the comedy of the human condition by drawing on the participants’ experiences with the elderly – themselves or others. These are general works that will include strategies for coping and may serve as inspiration to others.
About Craig Harris and his essay, “Breathing Under Water”
Craig Harris is the Artistic Director of Interference Arts, and is a composer, theater artist, writer and producer who creates music, multimedia performance works, interactive sculptural environments, and creative story spaces. Craig is a Jewish American whose family members include people who were displaced or died as a result of the pogroms of the early 20th Century and during the Holocaust. His daughter lived in the West Bank for several years, married a wonderful Palestinian man, and became part of a large extended Palestinian family, many of whom live in a refugee camp in Bethlehem under militarized Israeli occupation. Craig and his wife Candy Kuehn have traveled to the West Bank several times in the last dozen years, and have had many opportunities to experience aspects of how the Palestinians’ lives and families are affected and transformed by the Israeli Occupation.
“Breathing Under Water” follows Craig’s experiences traveling to the West Bank, Palestinian Territories, to visit their daughter and family living under occupation in Bethlehem, and it explores returning to the USA to face our own form of military occupation during the first several months of 2026.
About the Illustrations for “Breathing Under Water”
“Breathing Under Water” features digital illustrations by Candy Kuehn that provide a complementary visual narrative for Craig’s story. These digital illustrations were created using iPhonography (iPhone app photography and processing using many apps), smoothed in Photoshop, and printed on Canson’s fine art digital photo paper.
Candy describes her digital illustrations as follows: We all see “the world” within our “point of view”, and I share this “world” with my family, friends, artists, and with people/followers across the world on Facebook, Tumblr, Instagram, Behance, and mnartist.org. I am cross-sensed. I see music; I hear patterns and shapes; I touch/feel between spaces and time; I smell emotions change. The phone and I do this, together, and I now can show you what it is I see/listen/smell.
Candy’s digital illustrations are also used as imagery in movement costumes, in theatrical sets, and in multimedia installations.
